How much modification is generally necessary with an aftermarket bumper that ties into the same holes? My bumper has a strip of metal that extends forward to tie into those holes.

It just depends on the specific bumper or the install. Our skid would need to mount between the bumper and the rear crossmember.

I've been using this for a few years and it has held up very well. My 99 XJ only has 3.5" of lift and so this was something that I needed to have. I've taken it on a ton of trails around California including the Rubicon, Slick Rocks, and Deer Valley trail. I've hit it a few times and it has held up to everything. Luckily, it is tucked up high enough that I don't hit it most of the time.
Installation would be straight forward for most. I have a bumper with a rear swing out which makes use of the same areas as this and required some modification but not a lot.
As far as looks go, it isn't noticeable on the jeep unless you look up under the bumper, especially with the black powder coating.

With all that beef, you'd think it would stand out more. Should I have chromed it? Painted it yellow? Despite being twice the weight(and three times as strong, minimum) as the factory gas tank skid, it tucks up and out of the way and is nearly invisible when painted black. Having three additional attachment points to the rear crossmember is something the factory skid doesn't do, so there's another strength improvement. It's an easy-peasy bolt on to the factory holes - no mods required. Definitely recommend this American-made goodness!

Easy install. Very beafy. Cheaper to put the jcr gas skid on, than to replace a whole fuel tank.

Received my skid plate. Strong looking sucker. Ordered in bare steel, and painted it to match my jeep. Got the nut strips too. Will be installed tomorrow, 3-27-2016, because that's what Jesus would do.On my 97 XJ on the passenger side of the gas tank, there is a flimsy heat shield, and one of the bolts broke off. Had to cut it off, then I could remove the rusty old factory nut strip. I mocked up the new nut strips while I was waiting for paint to dry. Looks good. JCR sends nice hardware, but I decided to put Grade 8 bolts in just because. The JCR stuff is Grade 5, which would probably be plenty strong. Nothing wrong with it, I just love Over Kill, you know, that thrash band from back east. Thanks for another great product. I have the rock sliders too, but that's a project I haven't gotten around to yet. Soon. Very soon.
