What is the difference from XJ Steering Box Brace | Steel Spacer | Jeep Cherokee XJ (84-01) and XJ Unibody Tie-in Kit w/Steering Spacer | Jeep Cherokee (84-01)?
A
03/22/2021, 6:12:20 PM
The steering box brace is JUST the inner spacer that goes between the box and frame rails. The UNF kit includes that spacer as well as outer plates to stiffen the whole uni-frame and steering.

Sorry we haven't tested this kit with that bumper. Our brackets are designed to go between the bumper mounts and the uniframe on the outside.

If installing with an aftermarket bumper, do you install the bumper over the tie-ins or install the bumper then the tie-ins over top and tighten down?
A
06/25/2021, 11:08:27 AM
Bumper mounts over a tie-in.

I recently bought a used ARB 3450010 off a wrecked XJ. Will this tie-in kit work? I need something to reinforce for winch use. Thanks
A
10/28/2021, 11:13:00 AM
There would need to be enough room between the mounts and the Jeep's uniframe to add these, if there is not, there is a chance you could hammer your bumpers mounts outward for more clearance, but we have not dealt with the ARB specifically.

Will your tie in brackets work with a rough country bumper?
A
12/07/2021, 3:11:38 PM
The RC bumper should have tie-ins. Ours could work if there is enough room between the bumper mounts and the frame, you may need to bend the bumper mounts out slightly.

A

We haven't tested this on a rusty frame, so we can't be sure it will be strong enough for that.

this whole kit fits really well with 2 exceptions.
I paired this with an iron rock XJ Tow Hook Mount which actually worked with a couple of bumper mount adjustments and washer spacers in the other kit.
First, if using the stock bumper, then stop now and reconsider. It's a pain to try and mount the stock bumper when you have no captured nuts. No way to get a socket or wrench behind that bumper. I had to pull the Torx t50 bolts from the top and bottom of the bumper. In that lovely process the tabs that hold those t50 bolts rusted enough to really add some fun to the project.
Follow the instructions JCR wouldn't print for you or watch a video that does NOT show a stock bumper install...
1: Stock bumper: remove the stock bumper normally then pull the bumper mounts with the t50 Torx bolts. The t50 bumper bolts are a special kind of evil with rusty, flimsy, garbage mounting clips. mount the bumper mounts by themselves to your new JCR braces and test-fit the bumper. You will need to buy 4x new T50 nuts sized m10-1.50 to replace those evil clips that fell apart earlier. Reach into the sides of the bumper and secure the t50 bumper bolts and m10-1.5 nuts.
2: I kind of get it, but 2 extra holes and some bending could have kept the fender mounts. The cut it with a hacksaw method was fast and easy though.
When combining the xj tow hook mount from iron rock you will need longer hardware for the sway bar mounts as the metal will basically double. will need an alignment after this as well due to thicker steer box spacer..

These brackets are a must-have for any XJ operating a winch on the front bumper. The metal on the stock frame is paper thin. When I took my bumper brackets off to install these, it was obvious that the bolt holes had been stretched out horizontally after only using my winch three times. Eventually, the winch would have pulled itself and the bumper right out of the frame. Not really worried about that now that I have these uni-frame tie-in brackets. The instructions were clear and the install went smoothly.

These are great for those of us who want more support without going fill blown frame stiffiners. They added lots of protection around the steering box and help keep things tight. These are one of the first things I add to an XJ when I buy it.

I installed these brackets a few years ago on my ‘96 daily driver before installing the JCR DIY front bumper. I also added the steering gear cross brace. Everything is built well and fit great. The steering brace did need some modification which wasn’t a problem. I now picked up a 2000 because the ‘96 is too rusty. I plan to swap out all of the above parts to the newer vehicle. I would recommend these braces.

Great kit, easy to install and definitely strengthens up the front end. Only reason I have it 4 stars is because I had to drill my own holes for the fender support bracket, they tell you to remove or cut the bracket therefore there is no hole for it, but with a little pry bar action it all lines up and looks factory
